There's an exercise im trying to learn with alternate picking that goes like this:
----5-8-5---5-8-5-------
-----------8--------8-----
---------------------------
--------------------------
--------------------------
-------------------------- and it does it repeatedly. Ive noticed phrases like this pop up in loads of solos so wanted to get it mastered. Ive been practicing it like mad for ages now but dont seem to be getting anywhere. Any suggestions on what i should do?
Thanks |

| Just make sure you can play it slowly before you try nd speed it up. If you try to play it fast right away, it will be sloppy. |

Yeah, man. Just start slowly...really slowly. Then gradually speed it up without stopping. That's how I do it anyway. I just take whatever lick I want to get down and i start really slow, and then slowly speed it up. If it starts to sound messy, I stop and start over going slowly again.
Works for me anyway. |

Definitely practice with a metronome. Use alternate picking and try it 2 ways: 1) start with a downstroke 2) start with an upstroke. Certain licks will work better with 1 or 2. And if you are really obsessive, once you start building up speed, record and slow down the recording to see how well you are hitting each note. Sometimes I will play a really fast lick thinking I have it very clean but then with further analysis I find that it isn't as clean as I thought.
